Design Trends Forecast series 2021 - Belonging

We continue the series with the second trend forecast – Belonging. This trend is born from the complex social issues we currently face relating to identity (stereotypes in relation to ethnicity, sexuality, gender, age etc). There is an appreciation of diversity and free spirit as well as respecting heritage. Belonging is a rebuttal against being categorized and limited by tradition -letting go of what is not relevant today but simultaneously appreciating heritage. Belonging looks at enriching customs, being inclusive, empathetic, and united and sees 2021 trending towards strong collaborations with community, in particular those communities that are disadvantaged or practice traditional artisan crafts. The trend sees re-purposing of what we currently own and again, it is refreshingly low tech. Colour palettes are rich - dominated by Royal Blue (representing strength and positivity) and Magenta Purple (significant of deep emotional depth). Textiles are multicoloured – wools, velvets, cottons, Chanelle, boucle, shag pile and furniture shapes are exaggerated and oversized. Representative of artisan craft - furniture is not perfect and characteristically designed with irregularities. Textured materials such as rattan, straw is prominent.

The Belonging trend is a refreshing movement significant of the growth or evolution of the people which are ultimate drawn towards a deeper spiritual sense of what is profoundly important - inclusivity. Learning, respecting, and taking from tradition that which is relevant and valuable today and evolving and adapting towards new, united, inclusive tradition.
